  Flu Concerns

Concern about the flu and especially swine flu are leading to the circulation of some misinformation and the experience of unfounded fear about the seasonal flu and particularly the H1N1 or swine flu.  Here are a couple links that will give you the facts without the hype.

Flu Season Commandments

May I offer you some "Flu Season Commandments" gleaned from these links as we think about church this flu season:

Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing because our fear of contracting illness supercedes our faith in God.

Let us remember that our risk of getting sick is the same or higher at other places to which we travel (athletic games, restaurants, school functions, the grocery store! etc.) so as not to let skipping/attending church lull us into a false sense of security or panic.

Let us remember that we have a greater chance of catching the flu from touching a previously used grocery cart (unless you wipe it down first) than we do from taking communion or shaking hands during greeting time.

Let us use good hygiene when we gather as Christ's church. As a precaution, you will find hand sanitizer and tissues in the pews on Sunday for use after greeting time, offering time, or other times as you see necessary.

Let us pick up after ourselves in the church building, particularly in the pews.

Let us stay home when we are actually sick or truly believe we are getting sick - and that means stay home from everything, not just church.

Let us listen to the news/media reports with informed ears: like in many other stories, the sensational, the negative, the worst case scenario prevails (sells) when reporting on the flu/H1N1.

Let us eat right, and do things that boost our immune systems (see the links above).

Let us get the appropriate amount of rest (it's just a good idea generally) to foster our good health.

Let us take full advantage of the technology with which God has blessed us by getting immunizations against the season and the H1N1 flu, especially if we are in a high risk category.
